Reading on Kindle

This page has detailed instructions for opening the ebook using the Kindle app for your phone, tablet, or computer.

Kindle for your phone

Overview: You need to install the Kindle app (if you don't already have it), download the book from the internet, and then email the book to your Kindle. Here is the step-by-step.

 

  1. If you do not already have one, create an Amazon.com account.
     
  2. Download and install the Kindle app for your phone. Or just go to where you usually download apps and get it there.
    Note: It will ask you to login to your Amazon.com account as part of setup.
     
  3. Once it is installed, open the app to get a crucial piece of information.
     
    • Click on More in the bottom right.

    • Click on SETTINGS or APP SETTINGS, depending on your version of Kindle.

    • Look for the Send to Kindle Email Address. Write down the email address, as you will need it later.

  4. Go to the Project Gutenberg link for the book you are interested in reading. Click on the link to the Kindle (.mobi) file. You can choose either the file with or without images if both are available.
     
  5. Send an email to your Kindle.
    • Send it from the email account you use to log into Amazon.
    • Sent it to the Kindle Email Address you wrote down.
    • Attach the .mobi file you downloaded in step 4.
    • You do not need to include a subject or message, just the attachment.
       
  6. The next time you open your Kindle app when you are connected to wifi, it will automatically recognize the book. Click on it to download and read.
     
  7. Enjoy!

Kindle for your computer or laptop

  1. If you do not already have one, create an Amazon.com account.
     
  2. Download and install the Kindle app for your computer. It will ask you to login to your Amazon.com account as part of setup.
     
  3. Go to the Project Gutenberg link for the book you are interested in reading. Click on the link to the Kindle (.mobi) file. You can choose either the file with or without images if both are available.
     
  4. When given the choice, choose to open with Kindle. If the computer just downloads the file, double click on the downloaded file to open it. You computer knows to launch the Kindle app.
