Books & Audiovisual Materials
PILOT – The Library’s Online Catalog.

Use PILOT to find books, videos, models, pictures, slides, etc. in our Library. Try the most specific heading first, then broaden if necessary:

Helpful subheadings to know:
    Study and teaching
    Study and teaching (Secondary)

Helpful keyword to know:
    Activit?

Use Set more limits to search for only the media collection, limit dates, etc.

The Teaching Materials Guide may also be used to locate audiovisual materials.

Young Adult Literature
Fiction does not usually carry subject headings. To find a young adult novel then, you could either:

  1. Limit PILOT to only search the children's collection and then enter keywords you hope will appear in the title or note field, or
  2. Use a reference book or online database such as one of the following, to identify titles of books about a certain subject and then put those titles into PILOT to see if MU has the book.

To look for books that are not owned by the North Hall Library, go to Amazon.com and search their book section.  Borrow the titles you find through the Library’s Interlibrary Loan Service.

Periodical Indexes and Databases

This guide will provide you with information about the process of locating a journal article.

*If you are asked for an ID or login, type in the barcode numbers on your student ID card.*

Education Abstracts
Indexes over 500 core international periodicals, monographs and yearbooks since 1983. For some historical topics you might be interested in the paper copies of this index, available from 1929-1996, Ref. Z5813 .E23

ERIC
Indexes nearly 1000 journals as well as the ERIC documents collection from 1966-present. Includes the ERIC Thesaurus to help you select search terms. ERIC documents include curriculum guides, lesson plans, and activities. One good way to find activities in the ERIC database is to type in your specific topic (use a descriptor if possible) and AND it with ACTIVIT* . Newer documents are available online and older ones can be located on microfiche on 3rd floor.

To find magazine articles for middle school and high school age students, search EBSCOhost's Middle Search Plus and/or MAS Ultra School Edition.

EBSCOhost's Image Collection
From within any of the EBSCOhost databases click on image collection to search for pictures.
