Borrowing Materials

The Circulation Desk, located near the main entrance of the library, is responsible for checking out all materials, including course reserves. The Circulation Desk also maintains the Lost and Found items for the library.

Checking Out Materials
A Mansfield University ID card is necessary each time any materials, including reserve items that are used only in the library, are checked out. ID cards and circulation privileges are not transferable and are intended for use only by the person in whose name they were issued. A lost or stolen ID card should be immediately reported at the Circulation Desk.

Renewals
Items that have not been requested by another patron may be renewed:

To renew items in the library catalog, select the 'Book Renewal' option from the library navigation bar. You will need to enter your 18-digit barcode number found on the back of your University ID and your last name.  A maximum of three renewals per item may be made unless there is an outstanding hold or request for the item.

Returning Materials
All materials should be returned to the Circulation Desk. When the library is closed, books may be deposited in the book return located on the east wall of the building. Please do not place media materials in the book return as they are easily damaged.

Overdue Materials
A reminder letting patrons know their library items will be overdue soon is sent via e-mail to any patron who has a valid e-mail account in the library system. A link to renew the library material is included in the e-mail.  Another e-mail will be sent when the items actually become overdue and a link is provided in the e-mail to renew the items online. If you have no valid e-mail address, you will receive an overdue notice via U.S. Postal mail.  Library patrons who return all the listed items within the grace period will not be subject to overdue fines.

Fines
Fines for items not returned by the end of the loan period (or grace period if applicable) shall accrue as follows:

  • General Circulating Items: $0.25 per day
  • Media Items: $0.25 per day
  • Media and Study Room Keys: $1.00 per hour until returned
  • Reserve Materials: library use only items: $0.25 per hour; all other reserves: $2.00 per day
  • Videocassette Players: $10.00 per day

Holds
If an item is checked out, and you want the item when it is returned to the library, you can place a hold on that item. A hold can only be placed on an item that is checked out, not items on reserve, room use only items, or items that are available on the shelf. Place a request for a hold at the Circulation Desk or online through the MU Library Catalog (PILOT) by clicking on the “Request” button. When the item is available, you will be notified and the item will be held at the Circulation Desk for one week (three days for materials which circulate for one week). Any item that is currently checked out can also be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Recalls
After an item has been in circulation for two weeks, it may be recalled at the request of another patron. The recall notice will allow one week for the return of an item to the library. Items needed for course reserve will be recalled immediately. Place a request for a recall at the Circulation Desk.

Replacements
All patrons are responsible for replacement fees for lost or nonreturned items. Charges will be based on current replacement price for the item plus a $10.00 processing fee. Refunds for materials returned to the library after replacement charges have been paid are given only if the item has not been replaced or withdrawn from the collection.

Blocks
Unpaid fines or an excessive number of overdues will result in a loss of borrowing privileges. Unresolved charges will be turned over to Student Accounts for collection resulting in a block on future class registrations and transcript requests.

But I am not affiliated with the University
If you are not a student or employee of Mansfield University, you can still borrow materials from the library. For more information about becoming a courtesy patron, please see our site on Community Users.
